Chapter 11

The truth did not solve anything.
It made everything worse.
Victoria’s cooperation gave investigators a clearer timeline, but her credibility was damaged by months of lying.
Preston denied driving the Suburban.
His attorney argued Victoria was blaming him to save herself.
The deleted GPS record could be partially reconstructed from backup logs, but not instantly.
Financial investigators began examining the bridge loan and unauthorized guarantees separately.
Dante’s hotel project was effectively dead.
Dozens of employees and contractors now faced uncertainty because he had allowed Preston too much authority for too long.
Martin told him directly.
“You trusted him because he made problems disappear.”
Dante nodded.
“And you never asked how.”
“No.”
That admission cost more than anger would have.
Elena had her own reaction.
She refused Dante’s offer to cover every future expense personally.
“Child support and medical costs can be formal.”
Dante frowned.
“You think I’d make you fight me for money?”
“No.”
“Then why lawyers?”
“Because everything in your life becomes personal until somebody gets hurt.”
He had no answer.
They began working through a family-law attorney on paternity acknowledgment, medical expenses, and future parenting arrangements.
No marriage proposal.
No fantasy that the pregnancy magically made them a couple.
Dante attended appointments when Elena invited him.
He left when she asked for space.
Victoria moved out of the condo Dante had leased for her years earlier.
Her attorney arranged the return of personal property.
Dante did not see her.
Then Maria visited him.
“You still think you can fix this by being the good father now?”
Dante looked at his sister.
“No.”
“Good.”
She sat across from him.
“Because your son is going to inherit more than your name unless you change how you live.”
The words stayed with him.
Dante had spent his adult life believing strength meant making consequences fall on other people.
Now employees were losing work.
Elena had lost privacy.
His child had almost been harmed.
Victoria had become someone he barely recognized.
Preston had learned to weaponize Dante’s own closed system.

The truth had exposed everyone.
But accountability still required proof strong enough to survive outside the family.
