Chapter 13

The backup server did not contain the full GPS route.

It contained enough.

A sequence of location pings placed the Suburban behind Elena’s car for twenty-three minutes before the collision.

A final ping placed it less than half a mile from the crash site.

Preston’s security token accessed the record two days later.

The repair invoice showed damage consistent with contact on the same side marked by black paint on Elena’s car.

Investigators still needed experts to interpret the physical evidence.

Rachel refused to call it attempted murder.

Dante appreciated that.

Words mattered.

Elena’s original police report established she had described being forced toward the guardrail before she had any reason to accuse Preston publicly.

The certified letter proved he knew about the pregnancy.

The call-forwarding change proved he had interfered with communication.

Financial records established motive.

Victoria’s deletion established concealment.

The service-exit footage established his attempt to remove Elena from the reception after she confronted Dante.

No single piece solved the case.

Together, they told one consistent story.

Victoria agreed to provide investigators with her phone backup.

Messages between her and Preston showed months of pressure.

One message from Victoria read:

Just get her out of Chicago until after the wedding.

Preston answered:

I’ll handle it.

Another, sent after the crash:

She won’t be a problem now.

Victoria had replied:

What did you do?

Preston never answered.

Those messages did not make Victoria innocent.

They did establish where her knowledge changed.

Dante reviewed everything with Rachel.

“What happens now?”

“Investigators decide what they can charge. Financial prosecutors decide separately. Civil claims are another issue.”

“And me?”

“Your conduct at the reception is still being reviewed.”

Dante nodded.

He had stopped expecting truth to exempt him from consequences.

Before Victoria turned over her phone, she asked Dante for one private favor.

“No.”

“You don’t even know what it is.”

“If it involves Preston, no.”

She swallowed.

“It doesn’t.”

Dante waited.

“When this is over, don’t tell everyone I never loved you.”

He looked at her for a long time.

“That isn’t mine to prove.”

Victoria lowered her eyes.

May you like

Then she handed her phone to her attorney.

The last piece of protection between Preston and formal exposure disappeared with it.
