Chapter 5

Elena did not move into my house.
Good.
I wanted her safe.
My first instinct was to solve everything through proximity.
Apartment.
Guards.
Doctor.
Driver.
Money.
Control disguised as care.
She listened.
Then said:
“You’re doing exactly what Victoria warned me you would.”
That stopped me.
She was right.
Different intention.
Same effect.
I sat back.
“What do you want?”
She thought.
“My aunt’s place for now.”
“Okay.”
“One security car outside. Not inside.”
“Okay.”
“My doctor stays mine.”
“Okay.”
“And I decide when you come.”
Harder.
Still:
“Okay.”
She looked relieved.
That mattered.
Then:
“I’m not asking you to marry me.”
I almost laughed.
“I know.”
“No, Dante. You need to hear it.”
I did.
The baby existing did not create romance.
It created responsibility.
Different.
She continued:
“I don’t know who you are when you’re not fixing something.”
May you like
Neither did I, maybe.
We would learn.
