Chapter 9

Victoria asked to see Elena.
Elena said no.
Three months later:
Still no.
Good.
Then she wrote a letter.
Elena accepted it but did not read it for weeks.
When she finally did, she shared one line with me:
I hated that your baby proved Dante had a life I could not retroactively own.
That was painfully accurate.
Victoria did not hate the child.
She hated what the pregnancy revealed.
Our separation had been real.
My time with Elena had been real.
Victoria could reconcile with me.
She could not rewrite the months when I chose someone else.
The unborn child carried proof of a period she wanted emotionally erased.
So she tried to erase the proof.
