Chapter 10

Dominic asked to speak without the Coles present.
Nico refused.
“If they heard your secrets while my daughter paid for them, they can hear your explanation now.”
Dominic looked at him.
A long friendship shifted in one sentence.
His shoulders lowered.
Then he began.
The hidden support system was older than Gavin’s involvement.
Older than Sienna’s marriage.
Nico had known parts of it existed.
He had never known its structure.
Dominic built it after Nico’s brother was killed seventeen years earlier.
Several families were left without income.
Nico ordered assistance.
Then revoked support from two men he believed had betrayed the family before the death.
Their wives and children suffered anyway.
Dominic disagreed.
For the first time in thirty years, he ignored Nico.
He created vendors.
Moved money.
Paid families Nico had cut off.
For years, Dominic saw himself as the man correcting Nico’s cruelty without challenging him publicly.
Then Richard Cole discovered the system.
Instead of exposing Dominic, Richard used portions of it to cover failing projects.
That contributed to the hidden debt Nico eventually discovered.
Nico removed Richard.
Dominic said nothing.
He let Richard carry all the blame because revealing the hidden fund would expose Dominic’s own disobedience.
Marjorie spent twelve years believing Nico alone destroyed her husband.
Dominic knew that was incomplete.
And stayed silent.
Nico’s breathing changed.
Marjorie slowly looked at Dominic.
“You knew?”
Dominic met her eyes.
“Yes.”
“You knew Richard was covering money from your accounts?”
“Yes.”
“And you let Nico bury him?”
Dominic’s voice broke slightly.
“Yes.”
For the first time, Marjorie’s rage moved away from Nico.
Years of resentment fractured.
But Dominic was not finished.
When Gavin discovered the same hidden network years later, he confronted Dominic.
Gavin demanded access in exchange for silence.
Dominic agreed.
At first Gavin continued legitimate support.
Then personal family expenses slipped in.
Dominic noticed.
He allowed some.
Told himself it was repayment for what happened to Richard.
Then larger amounts appeared.
By then Gavin had enough records to expose the whole operation.
Dominic became trapped inside the secret he created.
That was why he warned Gavin about Sienna’s audit.
Not to help Gavin hurt her.
To protect himself.
And the insurance policy?
Gavin told Dominic it was routine marital planning.
Dominic approved the broker request without reading the full packet.
Just as he had approved hundreds of things for years because silence was easier than confrontation.
Sienna looked at him.
Her eyes were wet.
“You gave him the tool.”
Dominic nodded.
“Yes.”
Nico’s voice came quietly.
“And then you looked away.”
Dominic’s eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
That was the major truth.
Gavin had not built the machinery of betrayal.
He inherited it.
Dominic created the hidden system.
Richard exploited it.
Marjorie turned grievance into entitlement.
Gavin turned secrecy into leverage.
Sabrina became useful because she wanted her family protected.
And Nico—
without knowing any of it—
had created the culture where everyone feared telling him the truth enough to build entire systems around avoiding him.
Then Dominic placed one final object on the table.
Sienna’s missing phone.
He had taken it from Gavin before coming downstairs.
The recording was still intact.
May you like
And on it was a voice nobody expected to hear planning what should happen if Sienna refused to cooperate.
Marjorie’s.
