Chapter 10

Emily repaired things differently.

She did not apologize once.

She changed repeatedly.

When Evan visited her apartment, snacks were visible.

She never offered them anxiously.

Never said:

Eat, sweetheart.

Never watched his plate.

She let food exist.

That was harder than it sounds when everyone is hyperaware.

One afternoon, Evan took two cookies.

Then a third.

Emily said nothing.

Later he put one back.

Normal regulation returning.

She told me afterward:

“I wanted to praise him for putting it back.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because that would still make food performance.”

Good.

She was learning.

So was I.

Then she confessed something else.

The laughter at the original lunch had not all been cruelty.

Some relatives were uncomfortable.

They laughed because Diane laughed.

Status sets emotional temperature.

If the matriarch smiles, others read the moment as safe.

Then they participate.

That frightened me.

Not because everyone was secretly evil.

Because social permission can make ordinary people cruel quickly.

We changed nothing formally.

No family charter.

No grand rules.

I simply stopped attending gatherings where Diane controlled the tone.

Others eventually did too.

The Bennett table became smaller.

Maybe healthier.

Diane hated that.

Consequences do not always arrive as punishment.

Sometimes people simply stop showing up.
