Chapter 8

Diane refused to apologize.

For months.

Her argument evolved.

First:

It was a joke.

Then:

Claire approved discipline.

Then:

Claire misunderstood.

Then:

Everyone is overreacting because Daniel died.

Finally:

I was trying to stop the boy becoming entitled.

Each version protected the same thing.

Her judgment.

If Diane admitted she had been wrong, she would have to face more than one summer lunch.

Daniel.

His hidden snacks.

His jokes.

Every child she called greedy.

Every family gathering where food became obedience.

That was a large bill.

So she disputed the receipt.

I stopped arguing.

No contact with Evan.

No unsupervised visits.

No family meals together.

Emily maintained contact with her.

Fine.

I did not demand loyalty tests.

Then Emily told me something important.

“Mom cries after I leave.”

I said nothing.

“She thinks you’re taking everyone.”

There.

At last.

Fear.

Not excuse.

Diane had lost her husband eight years earlier.

Then Daniel.

Her social world narrowed.

The family table became the one place people reliably returned.

My move threatened one more empty chair.

Food was the center of that table.

So she guarded food like belonging.

You eat because you’re part of us.

You ask because she controls the table.

You leave and maybe you are rejecting everything.

Her cruelty came from fear transformed into authority.

Understanding it did not reopen my door.

But it stopped me from needing her to be a monster.

Monsters are easy.

Frightened adults with power are more realistic.

More dangerous too.
