Chapter 10

The forensic review found browser-session data, print history, and a series of scanned handwritten notes.

Dorothea had approved multiple Marlowe contracts through Elisa’s saved credentials.

But the deeper twist was in the notes.

Dorothea had designed the structure.

Not Harlan.

Years earlier, after Beth Carver calculated the missing royalties on Thomas Pierce’s books, Dorothea confronted Vincent D’Angelo privately.

He died before the dispute was resolved.

Marciano never knew the meeting happened.

Dorothea became convinced the D’Angelos would never voluntarily repay her.

When Harlan later began dating Elisa, Dorothea saw access.

At first she did not ask her son to steal anything.

She asked him to help place Marlowe in D’Angelo House’s foreign-rights network.

Harlan resisted.

Then Thomas’s estate faced financial pressure from old tax liabilities and medical debts Dorothea had hidden.

She told Harlan the D’Angelos already owed them more than they would ever recover.

Marlowe became her private form of repayment.

Three earlier clues changed meaning.

Dorothea’s obsession with reminding Elisa that “everything you have came from marrying my son” was not only snobbery. She believed the D’Angelos had built wealth while cheating her husband.

Her repeated presence during Meredith’s visits was not merely about covering the affair. She was monitoring the editor whose recommendations kept Marlowe’s contracts flowing.

And the serving humiliation had a second purpose.

Dorothea wanted Elisa to feel what Dorothea believed she had felt for decades: present in a wealthy family’s world but treated as somebody who should be grateful just to serve it.

Harlan knew about the scheme.

But not all of it.

He had approved related-party deals and hidden the conflict.

He had also benefited.

Yet Dorothea had used Elisa’s credentials to increase commissions beyond what Harlan believed had been agreed.

When Harlan discovered that six months earlier, he threatened to stop Marlowe.

Dorothea threatened to expose his affair with Meredith.

That was why the affair and financial scheme had become intertwined.

Harlan was not innocent.

He was compromised.

Dorothea controlled both secrets.

Elisa sat with the forensic report in her new apartment.

Marciano stood near the window.

“She used both of you.”

Elisa shook her head.

“No.”

Marciano looked at her.

“She used what both of us gave her.”

“What did you give her?”

“A company that trusted family relationships more than controls.”

Then Elisa looked at Harlan’s messages on her phone.

“And he gave her a marriage full of things he needed hidden.”

For the first time, the betrayal was not one affair.

It was an entire family system built on silence, resentment, and leverage.
