Chapter 11

The twist damaged everyone differently.
Marciano took the old royalty findings personally.
Their father had not deliberately cheated Thomas Pierce, as far as the evidence showed.
But his company had underpaid him.
That distinction mattered legally.
Emotionally, it mattered less.
“We should’ve found it years ago,” Marciano said.
“You were twenty-something,” Elisa replied.
“So?”
“So stop acting like being a D’Angelo makes you responsible for every mistake ever made under the roof.”
He looked at her.
She almost laughed.
“Do you hear how ridiculous that sounds when I say it to you?”
He did.
Harlan reacted with fury when he learned Dorothea had used Elisa’s credentials.
He demanded a meeting with his mother.
His attorney stopped him.
Meredith felt manipulated too.
She had believed Harlan was protecting Marlowe because of family loyalty and profit.
She had not known Dorothea was secretly increasing commissions.
Still, Meredith had slept with Elisa’s husband.
Helped exclude finance.
Accepted contracts she knew were unusually expensive.
Her own choices remained.
The board placed her on formal leave.
At home, Luca became the hardest part.
He missed his father.
He asked whether Daddy could come see his new room.
Elisa did not tell him about contracts or lipstick.
She arranged contact through the parenting schedule recommended by counsel.
Harlan remained affectionate with Luca.
That complicated everything.
A man could betray his wife and still love his son.
Dorothea was different.
Elisa stopped Luca’s visits with her while attorneys and a child specialist assessed what he had experienced.
Not because Dorothea had committed financial misconduct.
Because Luca had been used in humiliating household routines and had watched her demean his mother.
The child specialist asked him what happened when Meredith visited.
Luca answered simply:
“Grandma said Mom had to show she was useful.”
Elisa cried afterward.
Not in front of him.
She had spent months telling herself Dorothea’s behavior was annoying, old-fashioned, difficult.
Her son had understood the message perfectly.
Mom had to earn the right to belong.

Truth alone could not repair that.
Elisa would have to build a different home.
