Chapter 8

Anna came home from the hospital on a Thursday afternoon.

Not to the Serrano estate.

Elise chose a furnished apartment in a secure building near the hospital.

Augusto objected once.

Quietly.

Then stopped.

Two security officers remained in the building lobby with Elise’s consent.

Not outside her bedroom.

Not controlling visitors.

Not reporting her movements to Augusto.

That evening, Elise made the decision she had delayed since the kitchen.

She signed four sets of documents.

A petition for legal separation.

A request for a temporary protective order based on the documented interference with her medical care and physical obstruction at the estate.

Revocations removing Travis from every medical-information authorization and financial access permission she had previously granted him.

And written consent allowing an independent forensic firm to examine her email, phone backups, bank activity, patient-portal history, and relevant household devices.

Jennifer warned her before the final signature.

“Once we start full discovery, things may surface that hurt.”

“I know.”

“Things about your marriage.”

“I know.”

“Things about your family.”

Elise looked toward Augusto.

He said nothing.

Jennifer continued.

“You might learn facts you can’t unlearn.”

Elise looked down at Anna sleeping in the bassinet.

Then she signed.

“I already learned what happens when I let other people decide what I’m allowed to know.”

The decision was irreversible in the only way that mattered.

The marriage could perhaps be repaired someday.

The filings could perhaps be withdrawn.

But secrecy was over.

The forensic review began.

Travis received notice that evening.

His response changed immediately.

No more apologies.

He accused Augusto of buying lawyers to destroy him.

He accused Elise of postpartum instability despite her doctors documenting no such diagnosis.

He demanded access to Anna.

He insisted he had never harmed either of them.

Then he sent one sentence that Jennifer preserved immediately:

My mother was the one who stopped you. I never touched you.

Elise stared at it.

Technically, Travis had not grabbed her hospital bag.

He had not raised the rolling pin.

He had not struck her.

He had only stood in the doorway after she said their baby stopped moving.

That was the role he kept returning to.

Present.

Helpful to the aggressor.

Careful not to become the most visible one.
