Chapter 9

The forensic team found no secret offshore fortune.
No hidden second family.
No dramatic insurance policy.
What they found was quieter.
A pattern of administrative control.
Email rules created from Travis’s laptop.
Patient-portal sessions from his office.
Bank-link changes from his home computer.
Calendar events deleted after Elise scheduled them.
A private folder containing screenshots of arguments between Elise and Travis.
Most were ordinary marital fights.
Yet each file had been renamed with words such as:
UNSTABLE
PANIC
FATHER INTERFERENCE
REFUSES BOUNDARIES
Jennifer stared at the file list.
“This is documentation.”
Elise felt cold.
“For what?”
“We don’t know yet.”
The oldest screenshot was five months old.
It came from an argument after Elise told Travis she wanted them to return to marriage counseling.
Travis had complained that Augusto controlled too much of their life.
Elise agreed that her father could be overbearing.
Then she wrote:
But your answer cannot be letting your mother control me instead. If this doesn’t change before the baby comes, I’m taking some space.
Travis saved that message.
File name:
THREAT TO LEAVE WITH CHILD.
Elise covered her mouth.
She had never threatened to take Anna away permanently.
Anna had not even been born.
She meant spending a few days apart.
Travis had reframed it months before any legal dispute existed.
Another file contained a list of phrases.
Overreacts medically.
Runs to father.
Unable to tolerate household stress.
Threatens separation when challenged.
All language later appearing in Millicent’s attorney letter.
The document’s creation metadata traced to Travis’s laptop.
But the forensic examiner warned them not to jump too quickly.
“A file on his device establishes possession and likely creation. It doesn’t explain purpose.”
Then came another finding.
A deleted message thread between Travis and Millicent had been partially recoverable from backup data.
Only fragments.
Enough to show frequent conversations around Elise’s appointments.
Enough to show Travis repeatedly sending instructions.
Not enough to reveal the entire plan.
One fragment from the night before the dinner read:
If she starts talking about the hospital again, do not let her turn it into another scene.
Millicent replied:
I’ll handle her.
Travis answered:
Good.
Elise stopped reading.
Jennifer looked at her.
“We can stop.”
“No.”
The next line was damaged.
Only six words remained.
After the baby comes, she’ll have—
Nothing after it survived.
May you like
Whatever Travis intended was still hidden.
But by then Elise no longer believed Millicent was directing him.
