Chapter 12

Dorian apologized differently.

Professionally.

Too professionally.

“I failed your trust.”

True.

“I prioritized operational stability.”

Ugly phrase.

“I should have disclosed uncertainty.”

Still hiding inside language.

I stopped him.

“You watched my wife become the problem because she threatened your position.”

Silence.

“That’s what you apologize for.”

His face tightened.

Then finally:

“Yes.”

Better.

Dorian had not touched Vivian’s plate.

He had not instructed Elspeth to lie.

But he knew Vivian was challenging him.

He saw the missing safe dessert.

He saw the argument.

Then after her death, he chose the story most useful to himself.

That choice ended eleven years of service.

He asked:

“Is there any path back?”

“No.”

Not every relationship deserves rehabilitation.

He nodded.

That was the last private conversation we ever had.

Months later I heard he took work elsewhere.

Fine.

I did not chase him.
