Chapter 7

Claire Monroe lived three hours away.

I went myself.

No convoy.

Dominic drove.

She opened the door, saw me, and nearly closed it again.

“I don’t want trouble.”

“Neither did Vivian.”

That stopped her.

We spoke on her porch.

Claire remembered everything.

Too much.

Vivian had told the staff about her allergy when she arrived.

The kitchen had prepared a separate dessert.

It sat under a small cover on a side table.

Claire personally carried it toward the dining room.

Elspeth stopped her.

“She said Mrs. Vaughan changed her mind.”

My chest tightened.

“What happened to the plate?”

“Elspeth took it.”

“And?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire then saw Elspeth return to the dining room carrying a different dessert plate.

She assumed it was appropriate.

Why wouldn’t she?

Hostess.

Sister.

Family.

Then Vivian asked aloud whether it was safe.

Claire heard Elspeth answer yes.

That was the moment.

Not a hidden ingredient.

Not a complicated mechanism.

A trusted person gave reassurance she had no right to give.

“Did Elspeth know the replacement was unsafe?”

Claire began crying.

“I think so.”

“Why?”

Because twenty minutes earlier, Claire heard Elspeth arguing with the pastry chef about why the almond cake had been served at all.

Elspeth knew exactly what dessert contained.

She knew Vivian could not safely eat it.

My vision narrowed.

Claire whispered:

“I wanted to say something.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Elspeth looked at me.”

Silence.

“She was my employer.”

That was enough.

Hierarchy kills truth long before anything else.

Claire had carried the guilt for two years.

I did not absolve her.

I also did not turn her into Elspeth.

Different choices.

Different power.

Before leaving, Claire gave me something.

A folded place card.

Vivian had written on the back before dinner.

ASK RONAN ABOUT DORIAN. TONIGHT.

Claire kept it because after Vivian died, she became afraid someone would destroy anything connected to the argument.

My wife had been trying to reach me.

May you like

The message survived.

I had simply received it two years late.
