Chapter 15

Two years after the charity reception, Emilio took Ava to Harbor House for a children’s art afternoon.

She was five now.

Old enough to remember fragments.

Not old enough to understand foundation fraud.

She remembered the ice sculpture.

She remembered her aunt’s dress.

She remembered the powder room.

She remembered Calvin outside the door.

Emilio planned to tell her more when she was older.

Not everything at once.

Not family mythology.

Facts.

The same thing he wished someone had insisted on throughout his own childhood.

Ava painted a house with four enormous windows and six doors.

Emilio looked at it.

“That’s a lot of doors.”

“They open.”

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“Good design.”

She added another.

Across the room, a therapist handed Emilio an envelope.

“Tessa’s attorney sent this through the approved channel.”

He did not take it immediately.

“What is it?”

“A request.”

Tessa had completed the court-ordered treatment portion of her case.

Her restrictions remained.

She was not asking to see Ava.

Not directly.

She was asking whether, someday, if Ava’s therapist believed it appropriate and Ava wanted it, she might be allowed to send her a letter.

No pressure.

No deadline.

No request for forgiveness.

Emilio read the wording twice.

Then folded it.

Ava looked up from her painting.

“What’s that?”

“Something for grown-ups.”

“Boring?”

“Very.”

She returned to her doors.

Everything else had been settled.

The false authorizations were exposed.

Harbor House survived under independent control.

Owen faced consequences.

Calvin faced consequences.

Tessa faced consequences.

Emilio accepted his own failure of oversight.

Ava was safe.

No one in the family could again lock a door around her and assume status would make the truth disappear.

Only one question remained.

Tessa was still Ava’s aunt.

She had also hurt her.

She had once loved her before fear, pride, and desperation turned that love into something unsafe.

Years from now, would Ava want any contact with her?

Emilio could say no forever.

A part of him wanted to.

It would be simpler.

Then he looked at the painting.

Six doors.

Every one open.

He put Tessa’s request into his jacket.

He would not answer it today.

He would not answer it for Ava either.

When she was old enough to understand what happened, the choice would belong to her.

Until then, Emilio had only one job.

Keep every door around his daughter safe enough that opening one was always her decision.
