Chapter 3

Owen Marsh did not run.

That mattered.

He arrived at Rebecca’s office with an attorney the same afternoon.

He looked exhausted.

Not defiant.

Emilio stayed in another room while Rebecca conducted the meeting.

Owen admitted being in the administrative suite during the reception.

He denied touching Ava.

He denied seeing Tessa strike her.

He admitted Calvin entered the room.

He also admitted Tessa was there.

That destroyed Calvin’s first statement.

“What were you doing?” Rebecca asked.

Owen’s attorney answered first.

“My client will not discuss financial matters without protections in place.”

That sentence told Rebecca almost enough.

She asked one narrower question.

“Did Ava see you?”

Owen looked down.

“Yes.”

“Did you say Mr. Caradonna had not signed something?”

A long silence.

“Yes.”

“What?”

His attorney stopped him.

The meeting ended.

Emilio wanted to go after him.

Rebecca refused.

“He came voluntarily.”

“He knows something.”

“Obviously.”

“My daughter got hurt because of it.”

“Maybe.”

Emilio glared at her.

She did not move.

“Maybe,” Rebecca repeated. “We prove sequence before motive.”

The audit team began reviewing records earlier than scheduled.

The first irregularity appeared in a charitable construction project called Harbor House.

The foundation had committed four million dollars to convert an abandoned medical office into a pediatric therapy center.

The project was legitimate.

Children were actually supposed to be served there.

The contractor was legitimate.

The permits existed.

The problem was funding.

The foundation board had approved four million.

Nearly seven million had already been transferred.

“Who approved the extra three?” Emilio asked.

The accountant opened the digital authorization chain.

Emilio’s name appeared.

So did Tessa’s.

So did Owen’s.

Emilio stared at the screen.

“I never approved that.”

The auditor remained neutral.

“The system shows your authorization.”

“Show me.”

Three separate payment packages contained Emilio’s electronic approval.

Dates.

Time stamps.

Board-reference numbers.

Everything looked proper.

One approval had been made while Emilio was in Boston.

Another while he was at the estate.

The third during a week he barely remembered because Ava had pneumonia.

Rebecca looked at him.

“Could you have approved something quickly and forgotten?”

“No.”

“You sign a lot.”

“I know what seven million dollars looks like.”

The auditor examined the supporting minutes.

The documents said the board approved emergency expansion funding after a major donor withdrew.

Emilio attended the supposed meeting.

According to the minutes.

He remembered no such meeting.

Then Rebecca noticed something.

The minutes listed Tessa as present.

Calvin as an invited project adviser.

Owen as financial controller.

The same three people now connected to the locked room.

The child abuse had become the smallest part of a much larger problem.

And yet it was the only reason anyone had opened the binder that night.
