Chapter 1

Elena stopped her father before Nico could take another step toward Ethan.

“Dad.”

Nico didn’t look at her.

Ethan was still half-covered by white roses and bent metal from the ruined arch.

Two of his groomsmen had moved forward instinctively, then stopped when they saw the Bellaforte bodyguards.

“Dad.”

This time Elena touched Nico’s arm.

He finally looked at her.

“No more.”

Nico’s jaw tightened.

“He reached for Noah.”

“I saw.”

“He called my grandson a mistake.”

“I heard that too.”

“Then move.”

“No.”

The word carried farther than Elena intended.

Several guests turned.

Elena did not care.

“This is mine.”

Nico stared at his daughter.

Then at Noah.

The little boy still held the black box, although both arms were trembling under its weight.

Nico exhaled once.

Then stepped back.

That was the first thing Elena controlled that night.

The second was the box.

She crouched in front of Noah.

“Give it to me, sweetheart.”

Noah looked toward Ethan.

“He wanted it.”

“I know.”

“Do we give it back?”

“No.”

Noah handed it over.

Only then did Elena look at Ethan.

He had gotten to his feet.

One side of his tuxedo was covered in flower petals.

His lip was bleeding.

The humiliation he had intended for Elena had turned completely.

Yet she felt no satisfaction.

Only a growing sense that something was terribly wrong.

Lila stood several feet away.

Her wedding gown was untouched.

Her expression wasn’t.

“Ethan,” she said quietly, “what is in that box?”

“Old business property.”

“Then why did you try to grab it from a child?”

Ethan’s face tightened.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

Lila stared at him.

“We got married three hours ago.”

Nobody said anything.

That sentence landed harder than shouting would have.

Ethan turned toward Elena.

“Where did you get it?”

She looked at him.

“You know where.”

“No.”

“You hid it beneath the floor in the office.”

Ethan’s expression changed again.

The office belonged to the townhouse Elena had received under their divorce judgment two years earlier.

Ethan had used that room throughout their marriage.

Three weeks ago, a plumbing leak damaged part of the hardwood.

A contractor removed several boards.

Underneath one loose section was a shallow metal compartment.

Inside:

The black box.

Elena had called her attorney immediately.

She had not plugged in the hard drive.

She had not played the dictaphone.

The divorce order required both parties to return personal property discovered later, so Elena brought the box to the reception because Ethan had refused three requests to arrange a private pickup before leaving for his honeymoon.

She planned to give it to his attorney.

Then Ethan put a microphone to his mouth.

Then he called Noah a mistake.

And Noah, who had overheard enough adult conversation to know the box came from his father’s old office, carried it across the room himself.

Elena hated that part most.

A five-year-old should never have been placed in the middle.

She turned toward Nico.

“Take Noah home.”

Noah grabbed her hand.

“You coming?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

He looked frightened.

Elena kissed his forehead.

“Grandpa’s taking you to my house. I’ll be right behind you.”

Nico understood what she was asking.

Get the child out.

Keep the adults here.

He lifted Noah into his arms.

As they left, Ethan called after them.

“That drive belongs to me.”

Elena turned.

“Then your attorney can ask mine for it.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Do not open it.”

That was the first direct warning.

Lila heard it.

So did half the ballroom.

Elena looked down at the silver drive inside the box.

She had not known whether it contained business records, photographs, or nothing useful at all.

Ethan had just told her one thing for certain.

Whatever was on it mattered.
