Chapter 8

Ethan offered Elena money.
Eight hundred thousand dollars.
No admission.
No apology.
No explanation.
His attorney framed it as settlement of all disputes concerning the discovered devices, historical marital disclosures, and personal-property issues.
Elena read the proposed agreement.
Confidentiality.
Mutual non-disparagement.
Return of the original drive and dictaphone.
Withdrawal of pending subpoenas.
Waiver of any motion to reopen the divorce judgment.
Rebecca looked at her.
“Financially, it is not a ridiculous offer.”
Nico nearly came out of his chair.
Elena raised one hand.
Her father stopped.
Rebecca continued.
“That does not mean you should take it.”
Elena read the confidentiality clause again.
“What happens to the forged signature?”
“It disappears as a civil issue unless authorities independently pursue it.”
“Carol?”
“Her testimony remains what it is, but our case stops.”
“Lila’s documents?”
“Separate.”
Elena looked toward the hallway.
Noah was at school.
Good.
She did not want him in the house for this conversation.
Nico said:
“Take the money and let me handle Ethan.”
Elena turned.
“No.”
“You are choosing years of court over a man who isn’t worth an afternoon.”
“This isn’t about Ethan being worth it.”
“Then what?”
“My name is on a bank document I never signed.”
She put the agreement down.
“My divorce judgment may be based on financial disclosures that were false.”
Another page.
“And Ethan tried to take evidence out of Noah’s hands after calling him a mistake in front of two hundred people.”
Her voice remained steady.
“I’m not signing a document that helps everyone pretend this is private.”
Rebecca nodded once.
The decision came the next morning.
Elena filed a verified motion to reopen portions of the divorce judgment based on alleged fraud and material nondisclosure.
She also authorized Rebecca to provide the suspected forged lending documents and supporting records to appropriate financial-crime investigators.
Doing that created risk.
Investigators could examine Elena’s marital finances.
Transfers from Nico.
Legitimate Bellaforte companies.
Old joint accounts.
Things unrelated to Ethan.
Nico understood exactly what she was exposing.
He signed a limited waiver allowing his legitimate financial records connected to Elena’s marital assets to be produced if lawfully required.
That was as close as he came to saying he was proud of her.
The filing could not be undone quietly.
By afternoon, business reporters had noticed.
Caldwell Development issued a statement denying wrongdoing.
Ethan called Elena directly for the first time in months.
She answered with Rebecca listening.
“You have no idea what you just did.”
Elena looked out the window.
“No. I know exactly what I did.”
“You could destroy the company.”
“If the truth destroys it, I didn’t build that problem.”
“There are four hundred employees.”
“Then you should have thought about them before forging documents.”
“I never forged your signature.”
“Good.”
Elena’s voice stayed calm.
“Then the evidence will prove you right.”
Ethan hung up.

An hour later, Caldwell Development’s attorneys stopped fighting production of the corporate encryption-recovery records.
The drive was about to open.
