Chapter 16

Sarah tried to apologize for not telling me about Elena’s warning sooner.

I stopped her.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“I had the photograph.”

“You had four words.”

“I should have—”

“No.”

My voice softened.

“Elena chose not to tell me directly either.”

That hurt.

But I understood it now.

She feared my response would create danger before she and Ethan were safe.

Power can make people afraid to tell you the truth even when they love you.

That lesson stayed.

Sarah looked toward Lily.

“She notices everything.”

“I know.”

“She scares me.”

I almost smiled.

“Good trait.”

“For a Mafia boss.”

“She’s three.”

Sarah laughed.

“Exactly.”

I made one change after the birthday.

Not to security.

Not first.

I told every household employee something I should have said years ago.

If you see danger around my family, you come directly to me.

No chain.

No permission.

No concern about rank.

Sarah looked at me.

“Even Lily?”

I smiled.

“Apparently especially Lily.”

Ethan returned to school.

He had nightmares for a few weeks.

Not about eating the cake.

About Lily not reaching him in time.

That surprised me.

One night he asked:

“What if she didn’t see?”

I sat beside his bed.

“Then someone else would have.”

He looked at me.

“Your guards didn’t.”

Fair.

I corrected myself.

“Then I need to build a house where somebody can speak before a three-year-old has to run.”

He thought about that.

Then nodded.

Children know when adults are promising something real versus pretending certainty.

May you like

I could not promise danger would never exist.

I could promise silence would stop protecting it.
