Chapter 5

I remembered the silver boxes.

My father used them during private family ceremonies.

Not often.

Only when he wanted a gesture to feel sacred.

Coins for children.

Signet pins for new captains.

Small gifts.

After he died, most disappeared into storage.

I looked at Genevieve.

“You kept them.”

She did not answer.

She had managed my father’s ceremonial rooms for years.

Julian finally spoke.

“Mother has hundreds of old family pieces.”

“That isn’t an explanation.”

“It’s a box.”

“No.”

I held it up.

“It’s camouflage.”

That silenced him.

Anything carried inside a Moretti heirloom passed through a room differently.

Servers did not question it.

Guards did not open it.

Older capos assumed tradition.

Genevieve knew exactly which object could travel through my own security untouched.

I felt something cold settle inside me.

“You didn’t beat my guards.”

Her face tightened.

“You used what they respected.”

Still nothing.

Sarah spoke quietly from behind me.

“Mr. Moretti.”

I turned.

She looked uncomfortable.

“What?”

“I’ve seen another one.”

Genevieve went still.

“Where?”

“Your aunt’s sitting room.”

“When?”

“Last month.”

I stared at her.

Sarah continued.

“I was supervising cleaning. There were four silver boxes on the desk.”

Genevieve snapped, “Family property.”

Sarah flinched.

I saw it.

“How many were still there when you left?”

Sarah thought.

“Three.”

Silence.

One missing box.

Weeks before Ethan’s birthday.

I looked toward my aunt.

“You prepared this before today.”

Her face hardened.

“You’re inventing a story because a child ruined a party.”

Lily whispered:

“She didn’t ruin it.”

Genevieve turned toward her.

Lily moved behind Sarah.

Ethan stepped in front of Lily.

Eight years old.

Trying to shield the three-year-old who had shielded him.

I looked at my son.

Then my aunt.

Something inside me became clearer.

This was not only an attack on Ethan.

It was a test of what everyone around him would do.

A server obeyed.

Security trusted the crest.

Julian attacked.

Genevieve lied.

And Lily—

May you like

the smallest person in the ballroom—

refused to follow the script.
