Chapter 1

Jason broke Ethan’s airplane because he thought nobody important was watching.

Rachel stopped in the family-room doorway.

One wooden wing lay near the model table.

The tail had been crushed beneath Jason’s luxury sneaker.

Ethan sat on the carpet gathering pieces with both hands.

Three years old.

Trying not to cry.

Jason had already returned to his game.

The gaming system had cost more than most people’s cars.

Rachel had bought it for his eighteenth birthday.

Ethan looked up.

“Mom… we built it together.”

That hurt more than the broken wood.

Rachel walked over.

She removed the controller from Jason’s hands.

He stared.

“What the hell?”

“You destroyed his plane.”

Jason leaned back.

“So?”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

Jason smiled at him.

“You’re not my family. Your stupid plane isn’t my problem.”

Rachel’s expression changed.

Then Daniel entered.

“What are you doing?”

“Ask Jason.”

Daniel looked at the broken plane.

Barely.

Then he grabbed Rachel’s wrist.

“He’s my son. You don’t get to punish him.”

He shoved her against Ethan’s model table.

Then slapped her.

Ethan screamed.

Rachel did nothing.

Not yet.

Daniel raised his hand again.

She caught his wrist.

Moved it aside.

One counterpunch sent him backward through the media rack.

Boxes, game cases and headsets crashed around him.

Jason stopped smiling.

Rachel looked toward her guards.

“Lockbox.”

She took Jason’s phone.

Car key.

Gaming access card.

Carter expense card.

All four disappeared into metal.

Another guard disconnected the console.

Jason stood.

“You can’t do that.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You were right.”

His confidence returned for half a second.

Then Rachel looked at Daniel.

“He’s not my son.”

Silence.

“And you’re not my husband anymore.”

Jason went pale.

Alyssa finally lowered her phone.

Then Ethan whispered something from the floor.

“Jason said Daddy promised he could break anything of mine after tonight.”

May you like

Rachel slowly turned toward Daniel.

And the broken airplane stopped looking like ordinary cruelty.
