Chapter 17

Three months later, the family room looked different.

Not stripped.

Balanced.

Ethan’s model table remained beside the windows.

The repaired wooden airplane sat on a shelf above it.

The broken tail had been replaced.

The original cracked wing remained.

Ethan insisted.

“Because we fixed it.”

Rachel understood.

The gaming system returned eventually.

Not to Jason.

To the room.

Shared.

Jason was no longer living in the main house.

He stayed at a smaller Carter property under supervision while working his way back toward ordinary trust.

No expense card.

No luxury car.

No automatic access.

The first week, he called it humiliation.

Rachel ignored him.

The second week, he called it unfair.

She ignored that too.

By the third, he stopped calling.

Alyssa remained home.

She still made mistakes.

Still had moments of entitlement.

But she had stopped pretending silence was innocence.

Daniel stayed away from Ethan.

Not forever by Rachel’s declaration.

Until Ethan wanted otherwise.

So far, he didn’t.

One afternoon, Ethan carried the repaired airplane into the family room.

Jason was there for a supervised visit.

His first.

Ethan stopped.

Jason looked at the plane.

Then away.

No smirk.

No joke.

Rachel remained near the doorway.

Jason finally said:

“I’m sorry I broke it.”

Ethan held the plane tighter.

“You said I’m not family.”

Jason closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“Am I?”

Jason looked at Rachel.

She gave him nothing.

No rescue.

No answer.

He had to choose his own words.

“Yes.”

Ethan frowned.

“You said no before.”

“I was wrong.”

Silence.

Then Ethan asked:

“Can you touch plane?”

Jason swallowed.

“Only if you say.”

Ethan thought.

Then shook his head.

“No.”

Jason nodded.

“Okay.”

That mattered more than an apology.

He accepted no.

Later Ethan put the airplane back on its shelf.

The old gaming screen reflected it.

Wood.

Glue.

One cracked wing.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing impressive.

Yet that little plane had exposed an entire family hierarchy.

Jason broke it because he believed money made him important.

Daniel defended him because he believed sons should compete for power.

Alyssa laughed because she thought silence kept her safe.

All three learned differently.

Rachel stood beside Ethan as he pointed proudly at the repaired wing.

Jason had once told him the plane wasn’t his problem because Ethan wasn’t family.

He had been wrong about both.

The plane became everyone’s problem the moment breaking it revealed who they really were.

And Ethan never needed Jason’s permission to belong.
