Chapter 15

Dashiell turned seven.

He barely remembered the exact party.

Memory had softened.

Winifred remained in his life carefully.

Thaddeus too, less often.

One afternoon Dashiell asked Thaddeus:

“Were you fighting Daddy?”

Thaddeus looked at me.

I nodded.

His truth.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

Dashiell frowned.

“You hit him?”

“No.”

“Did he hit you?”

“No.”

“Then fight how?”

“Words.”

That amused him.

“Words fight?”

“All the time.”

Then Dashiell asked:

“Did Daddy hate you?”

Thaddeus’s face tightened.

“I don’t know.”

I answered.

“He was angry with him.”

Dashiell looked at me.

“Not same?”

“No.”

Important.

Thaddeus almost cried.

My husband’s final argument did not need to become permanent hatred for his surviving brother.

Then Dashiell said:

“I get mad Mom too.”

“Constantly,” I said.

He glared.

Thaddeus laughed.

Ordinary.

That was what restoration looked like now.

Not pretending betrayal never happened.

Not making the betrayer disappear forever.

Allowing relationships to become something narrower, slower, more truthful.

Edmund never reached that point.

He remained polite at distant events.

Dashiell barely knew him.

May you like

Also acceptable.

Blood is not a mandatory intimacy schedule.
