Chapter 16

When Dashiell was nine, he asked about the gray ledger.

He had seen it in my office.

“Daddy’s?”

“Yes.”

“What inside?”

“Things he wanted me to know.”

“Can I read?”

Not yet.

I said so.

He frowned.

“Why?”

“Because some of it is about adult problems.”

“Dad wrote about me?”

That surprised me.

“Yes.”

“What?”

Hard choice.

But one line belonged to him eventually.

Maybe now.

I read:

Dashiell should never inherit this just because he is our son.

He stared.

“Dad didn’t want me?”

My heart dropped.

“No.”

I moved beside him.

“He didn’t want anyone deciding your life because of your last name.”

He thought.

“Oh.”

Then:

“What if I want your job?”

“When you’re grown, we talk.”

“What if I want zoo?”

“Also talk.”

He smiled.

“Zoo boss?”

“Extremely dangerous.”

He laughed.

Then asked:

“What do you want?”

That question belonged to every parent.

I looked at Julian’s handwriting.

“I want you to become someone who can tell me no without thinking I’ll stop loving you.”

Dashiell stared.

“That easy.”

I smiled.

“Try me when you’re sixteen.”

He had no idea.

Neither did I.

But Julian’s ledger had changed from evidence of betrayal into something better.

Conversation with the dead.

Not commandments.

Not scripture.

Questions.

That was enough.
