Chapter 10

Adrian had not merely tolerated the Hale siblings.

He had been using them to build a power structure he could later blame on them.

That was the major truth.

The forensic records showed the architecture clearly once investigators had enough pieces.

Adrian resented being the public executive of an organization he did not truly control.

For years he defended Eleanor’s secrecy because threats against Maya were real and because discretion protected the family.

Over time, however, public authority became addictive.

Bankers called him.

Politicians called him.

Donors called him.

New associates assumed he was the final decision-maker.

Then Eleanor would quietly veto a deal, reverse a staffing choice, or redirect strategy from behind the curtain.

Adrian began telling himself the structure was inefficient.

Then humiliating.

Then illegitimate.

He did not stage a dramatic coup.

He built dependency.

Lakefront centralized event vendors.

Julian collected unofficial fees and controlled staff access.

Genevieve became the social gatekeeper around high-value donors.

Adrian quietly redirected relationships toward himself while Eleanor remained intentionally less visible.

Every cycle made more people dependent on his office.

Eventually, he planned to propose formal restructuring of the legitimate charities and businesses.

He would argue that the public reality should become the governing reality.

Adrian should hold actual control because he already carried the visible burden.

But he had a problem.

Julian and Genevieve’s methods were dirty.

Fees.

Threats.

Retaliation.

Inflated contracts.

Adrian knew.

So he kept his own direct financial benefit almost nonexistent.

The Hales made money.

Lakefront took fees.

Adrian gained influence.

If the scheme ever became public, the paper trail would make Julian look like the corrupt operator and Genevieve like the privileged socialite benefiting beside him.

Adrian could claim he had trusted the wrong people.

Then remove them.

Clean up the system.

And emerge as the responsible executive who saved the Moretti institutions from a scandal he had quietly enabled.

Genevieve had never understood that.

She believed marrying Adrian would make her more powerful.

Julian believed he was building a permanent business network.

Neither realized Adrian had kept both of them outside the real ownership structure.

That explained the clues.

Julian had extraordinary informal authority but almost no legal protection.

Genevieve acted like a future matriarch because Adrian encouraged her belief without ever formally giving her power.

The influence spreadsheet routed donors toward Adrian but documented the Hales as the operational actors.

And Adrian’s message—Not yet. Need another cycle before we formalize—meant exactly what it sounded like.

He wanted another year of dependency before he made his move.

The slap changed everything by accident.

When Genevieve struck Maya, she exposed Eleanor’s disguise.

When Julian attacked the supposed waitress holding Moretti authority, he exposed how confident he had become.

When the capos arrived and bowed to Eleanor, the Hales learned the truth Adrian had deliberately withheld from them.

Genevieve’s terrified face had not simply been fear of punishment.

It was realization.

She had believed Adrian was becoming the center of the family.

Then a woman in a banquet uniform summoned the entire room with one silent call.

Eleanor listened to the findings without speaking.

Finally she asked:

“Did Adrian order Genevieve to hit Maya?”

“No.”

“Did he order Julian to attack staff?”

“No.”

“Did he tell them to extort workers?”

“The evidence shows he knew about parts of the fee structure and allowed it. Some specifics remain under investigation.”

Eleanor nodded.

That distinction mattered.

Genevieve and Julian were not puppets.

They chose cruelty.

They chose greed.

Adrian chose to make their worst qualities useful to him.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Are you surprised?”

She thought about the cousin who had stood beside her after her father died.

Who held Maya as an infant.

Who took public pressure so Eleanor could remain less visible.

Then she looked at the influence map.

“Yes.”

May you like

Her voice was quiet.

“That’s why it worked.”
