Chapter 9

The influence map was more sophisticated than the fee scheme.

Donors were categorized internally.

Not officially.

In a private spreadsheet recovered from Lakefront’s cloud archive.

A — Adrian relationship

E — Eleanor legacy

Neutral

Movable

Hostile

Daniel looked at the categories.

“This is political.”

Eleanor agreed.

Not electoral politics.

Power politics.

The Moretti charitable network overlapped with legitimate companies, unions, community leaders, restaurant owners, attorneys, and donors who mattered socially.

Who controlled those relationships mattered inside the organization.

Adrian had apparently been measuring them.

The spreadsheet went back sixteen months.

Almost exactly when Lakefront was hired.

Beside certain names were notes:

Invite through Genevieve.

Julian handles.

Reduce Eleanor contact.

That last phrase changed the room.

Eleanor read it again.

“Reduce Eleanor contact.”

Daniel nodded.

Several donors categorized as “movable” had stopped receiving invitations to Eleanor’s smaller private dinners.

Instead they were routed toward Adrian’s events.

At the time Eleanor assumed her reduced public visibility was working as intended.

Now it appeared someone had been accelerating it.

Another file showed plans for the upcoming year.

Leadership transition optics.

No formal succession existed.

Eleanor was thirty-eight.

Healthy.

Not retiring.

Yet Adrian’s team was planning visuals for a transition nobody had discussed with her.

Then came the most revealing email.

Genevieve to Adrian:

How much longer am I supposed to pretend you’re just the executive when everyone already treats you like the boss?

Adrian replied:

Until the structure can survive the truth.

Eleanor sat very still.

Daniel looked at her.

“What truth?”

“I don’t know yet.”

But she suspected.

Adrian had spent years as the public face while Eleanor secretly held actual control.

Maybe he no longer viewed that arrangement as temporary representation.

Maybe he believed public perception should become legal reality.

Still, one fact did not fit.

If Adrian intended to challenge Eleanor, why allow Genevieve and Julian to behave so recklessly at her own gala?

Why expose a fee system through people so close to him?

May you like

Unless he believed Eleanor would never discover it.

Or unless Genevieve and Julian themselves were never meant to survive the transition.
