Chapter 18 - GRANT APOLOGIZES

Grant apologized to me four years after the assault.
Not through a letter written for sentencing.
Not through lawyers.
During a court-approved co-parenting session.
By then Clara was three. Grant had consistent unsupervised daytime contact and was approaching consideration for occasional overnights.
The therapist asked whether unresolved parental conflict could undermine that progress.
I said yes.
Grant looked at me.
“I’m sorry I hit you.”
I waited.
He continued.
“I’m sorry I hit you while you were pregnant.”
Still not enough.
“I’m sorry I used Clara’s sex to tell you she was less valuable.”
Better.
Then:
“I’m sorry I expected you to keep my company safe after I had already decided our marriage was disposable.”
There.
That was the sentence.
Then he said:
“I thought signing was something you owed because you married me.”
I looked at him.
“And now?”
“Now I understand the guaranty was yours because the risk was yours.”
Good.
Then the therapist asked what he wanted from the apology.
Grant said:
“Nothing.”
Excellent.
I did not forgive him that day.
I said:
“I believe you understand more than you did.”
That was all.
Two years later, forgiveness arrived quietly enough that I did not notice until someone asked.
I no longer wanted him punished again.
That was not the same as trust.
We became functional co-parents.
Never friends exactly.

Something narrower.
Sometimes narrower is healthy.
