Chapter 23 - GRANT BECOMES A FATHER INSTEAD OF AN HEIR

Grant’s relationship with both children improved because he stopped treating fatherhood like succession.

It took years.

He attended therapy longer than the court required.

Good.

He worked at the equipment distributor and eventually became regional president through ordinary promotion. No Hale family title.

He paid support.

Showed up.

Missed one school recital because of a flight delay and apologized without buying a horse.

Progress.

Then Hale Industrial offered him a nonexecutive consulting project at fifty-one.

Independent board approval.

Narrow scope.

No personnel authority.

No finance authority.

He accepted.

Evelyn considered it restoration.

Grant corrected her.

“It’s a contract.”

That sentence told me more than a speech would have.

Later, when Clara was sixteen, Grant asked whether she wanted a tour of Hale’s robotics plant.

She said yes.

Not because it belonged to her.

Because robots.

Miles came too.

An engineer showed both children the automated cutting line.

No one introduced Miles as future Hale.

No one introduced Clara as Grant’s daughter from first marriage.

They were two teenagers wearing safety glasses.

The company survived the absence of mythology for two hours.

It kept going afterward.
