Chapter 1 - THE LOCKET

The bridal-suite door locked behind Sofia Caruso with a soft metallic click.
She turned.
Gregory Vale was no longer smiling.
The man who had spent six months touching her gently in public now stood between her and the door with his jacket removed and his white wedding shirt open at the collar.
A metal golf club rested in one hand.
Sofia stared at it.
“Gregory?”
He stepped forward.
She moved backward.
The edge of her bridal gown touched the bed.
“What are you doing?”
Gregory grabbed her hair.
Sofia cried out.
He forced her down against the mattress and pressed the golf club horizontally across her shoulders.
Her veil twisted beneath her.
Her earrings caught briefly in her hair.
Gregory leaned close enough that she smelled champagne on his breath.
“Your father can’t protect you after you become my wife.”
Sofia stopped struggling for half a second.
Not because she believed him.
Because she suddenly understood that the gentle man she married that afternoon had been hiding someone else.
Then she screamed.
Outside, Lorenzo Caruso stopped in the adjoining corridor.
He had been returning from a private conversation with two family elders.
He heard his daughter once.
That was enough.
Lorenzo reached the bridal-suite door.
Locked.
One bodyguard moved toward the handle.
Lorenzo hit the door with his shoulder before the man could.
The frame cracked.
The second impact broke it open.
Lorenzo entered.
Then froze.
Sofia was pinned against the bed.
Gregory’s hand remained tangled in her hair.
The golf club pressed across her shoulders.
For one terrible second, Lorenzo saw his daughter as a little girl again.
Then the feeling disappeared beneath something colder.
He crossed the room.
Gregory barely had time to turn.
Lorenzo tore him away from Sofia and shoved him across the carpet.
Sofia immediately sat up.
Her hands shook violently.
“Dad… Please take me home.”
Lorenzo reached her.
He checked her face.
Her shoulders.
Her wrists.
Then he moved her behind him.
Gregory got up.
Humiliation filled his face.
He grabbed the golf club.
Then swung toward Lorenzo.
Lorenzo caught the metal shaft with both hands.
The impact jolted through his arms.
He ripped the club free.
Gregory stumbled.
No one spoke.
Then Gregory lunged past Lorenzo toward Sofia.
That ended whatever restraint remained.
Lorenzo drove the golf club horizontally into Gregory’s upper body.
Gregory went backward onto the floor.
The two bodyguards moved immediately.
One blocked his shoulders.
The other stood between him and Sofia.
Lorenzo did not strike him again.
He didn’t need to.
Sofia stood behind her father with one hand gripping the back of his three-piece suit.
Gregory looked up.
His breath came hard.
Lorenzo lowered the club.
“You married my daughter.”
His voice was almost calm.
“You never owned her.”
Gregory’s face became frightened.
Not only because Lorenzo was standing over him.
Because the hallway had filled with wedding guests.
The secret Gregory intended to hide behind a locked door now belonged to witnesses.
Sofia pulled at Lorenzo’s sleeve.
“Dad.”
He turned immediately.
“Take me home.”
“Yes.”
No questions.
No demand that she explain.
No speech about the wedding.
Lorenzo removed his suit jacket and placed it around Sofia’s shoulders.
Her veil hung crooked.
One heel had come loose.
He bent and removed both shoes so she would not have to walk in them.
Then he lifted her into his arms.
Gregory laughed from the floor.
It was a strange sound.
Bitter.
Defeated.
Lorenzo stopped.
“Something funny?”
Gregory looked at Sofia.
Then at Lorenzo.
“You really don’t know.”
Lorenzo’s expression hardened.
“Know what?”
Gregory smiled through the pain.
“That’s why this was so easy.”
One bodyguard pushed him back when he tried to rise.
Lorenzo turned away.
He would not let Gregory pull Sofia into another scene.
Then something fell from Gregory’s trouser pocket.
A silver chain struck the floor.
Sofia saw it first.
“Wait.”
Lorenzo stopped.
The chain ended in a small oval locket.
Black enamel.
Tiny white flowers around the edge.
Sofia slid from her father’s arms.
Her face changed.
She knew that locket.
There was an old photograph on her bedroom dresser.
Her mother wore it in almost every picture taken during Sofia’s childhood.
Alessandra Caruso had been wearing it the last night Sofia saw her alive.
Lorenzo stared at the necklace.
His wife had died fifteen years ago.
The locket had disappeared with her.
Sofia looked toward Gregory.
“Where did you get my mother’s necklace?”
Gregory’s smile vanished.
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Answer her.”
Gregory swallowed.
Then said:
“My father gave it to me.”
The room went silent.
Lorenzo’s face slowly lost its color.
Gregory’s father was Thomas Vale.
Lorenzo’s former bodyguard.
The man the Caruso family had blamed for Alessandra’s death.
The man who disappeared the same night she died.
Gregory looked directly at Lorenzo.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Ask him why my father had your dead wife’s locket.”
