Chapter 8 - ALESSANDRA’S BOX

The key opened a cedar box.

Thomas kept it inside a storage cabinet at the church.

He placed it on a table in a quiet back room.

Sofia stood beside Lorenzo.

Thomas stepped away.

“This belongs to you.”

Inside were simple things.

A green scarf.

Three photographs.

A child’s drawing Sofia made at eight.

A recipe written in Alessandra’s handwriting.

Nothing powerful men would understand as valuable.

Then Sofia found a folded piece of fabric beneath everything.

Her mother’s veil.

Not the wedding veil.

A small lace covering Alessandra wore at Sofia’s baptism.

Wrapped inside it was a stack of handwritten pages.

Sofia looked at Thomas.

“Mom wrote these?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Over several months.”

Lorenzo did not touch them.

They were not his.

Sofia read.

Alessandra wrote about the estate.

About Cesare.

About Lorenzo.

About Sofia.

She loved her husband.

That appeared everywhere.

So did frustration.

Lorenzo could confront enemies in seconds.

But family habits took years.

Alessandra wrote:

He thinks because he is kinder than the men who raised him, the house is already different.

Sofia looked toward her father.

Lorenzo accepted it.

She continued.

Cesare had begun teaching Sofia old Caruso rules.

Do not cry in front of guests.

Never contradict an elder publicly.

Family problems stay inside family rooms.

A Caruso daughter does not embarrass the name.

Sofia remembered some of it.

Not as lessons.

As atmosphere.

Things children absorbed before knowing they had learned.

Then she reached the final pages.

Alessandra described Gregory.

Twenty-one years old.

Angry after Thomas’s disappearance became a possibility even before the fire.

Cesare had been meeting with him.

Feeding his resentment.

Alessandra confronted Cesare.

She wrote:

He likes wounded young men because gratitude makes them obedient.

Sofia’s stomach tightened.

Cesare did not create Gregory’s violence fifteen years later.

But he had learned early how to aim Gregory’s anger.

Then Alessandra wrote:

If anything happens to Thomas, Gregory will need truth before men like Cesare give him a cleaner lie.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Sofia looked at him.

“You tried.”

“Once.”

“Seven years ago.”

He nodded.

Gregory left.

Thomas did not chase him.

That was one of his regrets.

“I told myself he was an adult.”

“So you let him leave angry.”

“Yes.”

Sofia thought of Lorenzo.

Different men.

Same instinct.

Respecting distance until distance became silence.

She continued reading.

The final page was addressed to Lorenzo.

Not a goodbye.

A plan.

Lorenzo,

Tomorrow I am asking you one last time to move out of the estate with us.

Not away from the family.

Away from the house where every older voice becomes law because the walls remember it that way.

Sofia looked at her father.

Lorenzo sat down.

Alessandra continued:

If you say no, I am taking Sofia to my sister’s for a month.

You can come when you are ready.

Sofia stopped.

Her mother had not been planning to disappear permanently.

She was creating distance.

A boundary.

Then came the line that changed Lorenzo’s understanding of the night.

I think you will come.

You are slow with family.

But you always come when Sofia needs you.

Lorenzo covered his mouth.

Fifteen years believing Alessandra died thinking he chose the Carusos over her.

She had still believed in him.

Thomas looked away.

Then Sofia found one final item at the bottom.

A photograph.

Cesare stood outside the summer house.

Date written on the back.

Three days before the fire.

Beside him stood Gregory.

Twenty-one.

Sofia stared.

“Gregory was there.”

Thomas frowned.

“What?”

He had never seen the photograph.

Lorenzo turned it over again.

Alessandra had written one sentence.

Cesare brought Thomas’s son here tonight and told him Lorenzo was trying to destroy his father.

Thomas went pale.

May you like

Gregory’s hatred did not begin after the fire.

Cesare had been preparing him before it.
