Chapter 1

“She locked us in, Daddy.”

For one second, I heard nothing else.

Not the crystal glasses.

Not the chairs shifting.

Not thirty guests suddenly remembering they had somewhere else to look.

Blythe still held Mirella’s hand.

My daughter was six.

She did not understand why every adult in the ballroom had gone silent.

Honora did.

She took one step backward.

I stayed where I was.

“Mirella.”

Her eyes lifted to mine.

“Is that true?”

Honora answered first.

“There was a fire.”

I did not look at her.

“I asked Mirella.”

The maid’s fingers tightened around the cane I had returned to her.

“Yes.”

One word.

Enough.

“When?”

Mirella swallowed.

“Before the smoke.”

Honora’s face changed.

That distinction mattered.

She had not locked them inside because flames blocked the corridor.

She had locked them inside first.

Then the fire happened.

Blythe tugged my sleeve.

“She took the key.”

My jaw tightened.

“What room?”

“The blue sewing room.”

I knew it.

West wing.

Two doors.

One into the main corridor.

One narrow service door leading toward the laundry stairs.

The second door had been jammed for years.

Or so I thought.

Mirella looked down at her bandaged leg.

“I got the service door open.”

That was how she had carried Blythe out.

The story I had been told six weeks earlier was different.

Smoke spread unexpectedly.

Blythe became frightened.

Mirella found her.

They escaped.

Mirella injured her leg on the stairs.

Heroic.

Terrible.

Accident.

No locked door.

No missing key.

I finally looked at Honora.

“What were they doing in that room?”

She crossed her arms.

“Blythe was hysterical.”

My daughter flinched.

I saw it.

“Hysterical about what?”

Silence.

Then Blythe answered.

“Mommy’s things.”

My dead wife.

Eliana.

The room became colder despite the chandeliers.

I turned back to Honora.

“What did you do with Eliana’s things?”

Honora’s lips parted.

Behind her, Mirella closed her eyes.

That was when I understood.

The fire had not begun with flames.

It had begun with someone deciding my daughter’s mother needed to disappear from the house.
