Chapter 12

Beatrice changed slower.

She remained convinced I had overreacted.

“Honora lost her future because of one door.”

I stared.

“No.”

We were at a family luncheon.

“She lost it because of everything around that door.”

Beatrice sighed.

“You men pretend marriages happen in empty houses.”

Interesting criticism.

Accurate enough to hear.

She continued.

“A new wife enters history already written by another woman.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you surprised she fought for space?”

“I’m not.”

That confused her.

“I’m surprised by what she thought fighting allowed.”

Silence.

Beatrice looked toward Blythe playing nearby.

Then toward Mirella.

“I still think that maid encouraged the attachment.”

I turned.

“Mirella did not create Blythe’s mother.”

Beatrice flinched.

Good.

“You keep talking as though Eliana was a rival strategy.”

She looked away.

“She was a dead woman my granddaughter loved.”

That was the difference.

Later Beatrice apologized to Mirella privately.

Mirella told me only because Beatrice did something unusual.

She asked whether she could sit.

Not commanded.

Asked.

Small.

Then said:

“I treated you as though your position made your judgment less important.”

Mirella accepted the apology.

Not friendship.

Fine.

Beatrice eventually understood that staff had been convenient targets because they could be dismissed without challenging family equals.

That changed how she spoke at events.

Not perfectly.

Enough.

Power does not always announce itself through violence.

Sometimes it is simply knowing who must absorb your bad mood because they need the job.

Once I saw that inside my house, I began seeing it everywhere.

Among captains.

Managers.

Relatives.

Me.

May you like

Uncomfortable.

Useful.
