Chapter 12

Calder met Elowen after seventeen years.

I was not there.

Later he told me she slapped his shoulder.

Apparently age had not softened her.

“You should have told someone,” she said.

He agreed.

Then:

“So should you.”

Also true.

They both laughed.

Good.

The old marriage story finally stopped belonging exclusively to Althea.

Calder later asked to meet Sabella too.

Why?

Because as children, they had met once.

Sabella did not remember.

He did.

Elowen brought six-year-old Sabella to Althea’s wedding because childcare fell through.

There was a photograph.

Tiny Sabella asleep on two chairs.

Althea standing behind her in a simple white dress.

Calder beside her.

Elowen holding a bouquet.

One image.

A whole history denied.

Sabella stared at it for a long time.

“She knew me.”

“Yes.”

Not just the surname.

Not just the face.

Althea had held sleeping Sabella at her own wedding decades earlier.

Then years later looked directly at the young maid and behaved as though she was nobody.

That wounded Sabella differently.

Cruelty from a stranger is one thing.

Erasure from someone who once knew your mother’s laugh is another.

Sabella kept the photograph.

Not as evidence.

As correction.

Her history belonged to her too.

Calder asked if she wanted more photographs.

She said:

“Maybe later.”

Good.

May you like

Nobody dumped the entire past into her lap because truth had finally become available.

People deserve pacing.
