Chapter 16

Elowen moved into a small apartment three streets from Sabella.

Not with her.

Important.

After six months controlled at Willow House, independence mattered.

She started volunteering at a community sewing room.

Apparently every city contains fabric waiting for Elowen’s opinion.

Sabella visited twice a week.

Sometimes more.

Sometimes not.

Normal.

On my fifty-first birthday, they both came to dinner.

Elowen studied the blue sitting-room wallpaper.

“You kept it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“It was expensive.”

She laughed.

Good.

Then became serious.

“Does it bother you?”

“No.”

The wall had not lied.

People did.

I preferred keeping one honest witness.

Sabella entered carrying a framed photograph.

The same birthday image Althea used to torment her.

I stared.

“You kept that?”

“Yes.”

She had cropped nothing.

Blue wallpaper visible.

Elowen seated against it.

Different meaning now.

Sabella placed it beside another photograph taken that afternoon.

Same mother.

Same wall.

This time Sabella sitting beside her.

No cake.

No mockery.

No disappearance.

I understood.

Not replacement.

Correction.

They left both photographs on the side table during dinner.

Guests who knew the story noticed.

Nobody commented.

Good.

Some symbols become powerful only when people stop explaining them.
