Chapter 13

The hidden room was demolished.

Not because Lila asked.

Because I hated it.

Then I stopped the workers.

Changed my mind.

I asked her.

Important.

She walked into the room one final time.

Looked at the cot.

The small table.

The serving hatch.

“Break door.”

Only that.

So we did.

The wall remained.

The room became storage again.

No locked hatch.

No child bed.

No symbol preserved beyond usefulness.

Lucy watched the workers.

“Where girl cry now?”

Lila answered before I could.

“My room.”

Not crying.

Just living.

Good.

The wardrobe where Imogen shoved Lucy stayed too.

Lucy turned it into a dress-up closet.

Within weeks, both girls were hiding inside it voluntarily and jumping out at staff.

Context changes objects faster than adults think.

One afternoon I found bread crumbs on the floor.

My body tightened.

Then I saw them.

Lucy and Lila feeding a stuffed horse.

I laughed.

They looked guilty.

“Clean it.”

That was all.

No trauma speech.

No history lesson.

Childhood should eventually become boring.

That was success.
