Chapter 12

The funeral plan changed how we handled support inside Blackwell.

Evan had been vulnerable because Silas quietly paid his family expenses.

That should never have given one elder private leverage.

So we rebuilt support.

No secret benefactors.

No favors disguised as personal generosity.

Widows.

Children.

Medical needs.

Housing.

Education.

Handled through a small internal fund with several people involved.

No one person could say:

I paid for your daughter, therefore you owe me.

Some older men hated it.

They called it impersonal.

Good.

Help should be impersonal enough not to become a leash.

Ruth joined the oversight group.

She terrified everyone with spreadsheets despite pretending she hated numbers.

Peter knew none of this.

He was six by then.

His financial priorities were stickers and cereal.

Healthy.

One afternoon he overheard Miles mention “the funeral thing.”

Peter looked at me.

“What funeral thing?”

Miles froze.

I answered.

“The night Gwendolyn told you I would die.”

“Oh.”

Then Peter returned to his toy.

That was it.

The event that rearranged half my organization occupied approximately four seconds of his current attention.

Good.

Children should outgrow our crises.

Adults often make the opposite mistake.

We preserve the wound because it became meaningful to us.

Peter had other things to do.

I let him.
