Chapter 14

Peter turned eight.
He found the old cue card in a storage box.
The one Gwendolyn had prepared.
DADDY LOVED BLACKWELL. UNCLE MILES WILL KEEP IT SAFE UNTIL I’M BIG.
I had forgotten it survived.
He read it himself now.
Looked at me.
“What is this?”
I told him.
Everything appropriate for eight.
Not the cellar details.
Not conspiracy architecture.
Just:
Some adults expected me to die.
They wanted you to say this afterward.
He stared at the card.
“Why?”
“Because if you said it, other adults might think you agreed with them.”
He looked offended.
“I was five.”
“Yes.”
“That’s stupid.”
Correct.
Then:
“Did Miles write?”
“No.”
“Gwendolyn?”
“Yes.”
He thought.
Then carried the card to the kitchen.
Dropped it in the trash.
No burning.
No archive.
No dramatic ripping.
Trash.
I almost stopped him.
History.
Evidence.
Then I remembered Marcus’s old note from another life lesson: not every poisonous sentence deserves preservation.
I let it go.
Peter washed his hands.
