Chapter 3

Enzo remembered Celeste arriving in winter.

Barefoot inside expensive shoes because one heel had broken.

No coat.

One suitcase.

She kept asking whether Preston was safe.

That detail broke something in him.

He looked at Enzo.

“She asked about me?”

“First thing.”

Warren scoffed.

“She enjoyed performances.”

Preston turned toward him.

I saw it.

The first crack.

“What happened?” I asked Enzo.

My father gave Celeste a room.

Not inside the main house.

In the west cottage behind the gardens.

He intended to move her somewhere safer by morning.

Then someone told Warren where she was.

Warren looked at Enzo.

“You have no proof.”

Enzo laughed quietly.

“You arrived before sunrise.”

Preston stared at his father.

“You found her?”

Warren did not answer him.

That was answer enough.

I felt anger rise slowly.

Not mine alone.

The room had changed around Preston.

Minutes earlier, he was the man who raised a golf club toward me because he thought fear established authority.

Now he was thirteen again, hearing his mother had tried to escape a house he spent his whole life believing she willingly abandoned.

“What did my father do?” I asked.

Enzo’s expression darkened.

“Too little.”

That hurt.

He explained.

Warren brought six Hale men.

My father could have started a war.

Instead, he negotiated.

Celeste would return home for one night.

Warren promised she could speak to Preston and decide what happened next.

“She agreed?”

“No.”

Enzo looked ashamed.

“Your father convinced her.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

I loved my father.

That did not make every choice he made defensible.

“What happened the next day?”

Enzo shook his head.

“She never came back.”

Warren folded his arms.

“Because she chose her family.”

Preston stared at him.

“That’s not what you told me.”

Warren turned.

“What?”

“You told me she ran with someone else.”

Silence.

There it was.

Two versions.

One father.

One missing woman.

I looked at Warren.

“Which lie do you prefer?”

His eyes became cold.

“You have no idea what my marriage was.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“But I know your son entered this room thinking violence was a family lesson.”

Preston looked away.

Then Enzo added one more thing.

“Celeste left something in the west cottage.”

Warren’s expression changed instantly.

“What?”

Enzo looked at me.

“A cedar box.”

Warren moved.

My bodyguards blocked him.

And suddenly I knew that box had survived longer than the story Warren built around his wife.
