Chapter 9

The Hale plan had three stages.

Celeste knew because Warren had used the same architecture with her family decades earlier.

First, marriage.

Second, shared security.

Third, dependency.

The bride’s family slowly allowed Hale men into routes, meetings, properties, and household access because rejecting them looked like rejecting the marriage.

Then Warren turned access into influence.

One crew at a time.

One favor at a time.

No open takeover.

Just gradual absorption until the other family could no longer distinguish alliance from surrender.

That was what happened to Celeste’s family.

It was supposed to happen to mine.

Preston stared at Warren.

“You told me Giulietta’s men would respect me after the wedding.”

“They would.”

“You told me that was all.”

“It was enough.”

“No.”

Preston stood.

“You were going to use me.”

Warren laughed.

“Grow up.”

That phrase seemed to land deeper than anything else.

Preston had spent his life performing adulthood for a man who only valued him as an instrument.

I did not feel sorry enough to forgive him.

But I understood the shape.

Celeste turned to me.

“Your capos would be the real target.”

I nodded.

Marriage could open doors no threat could.

Warren knew that.

Then Enzo spoke.

“There may already be Hale men inside our structure.”

I looked at him.

“How many?”

“Three I know of.”

That irritated me.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Different words. Same problem.”

Enzo accepted that.

Good.

We returned to my estate that night.

Not for a wedding.

For a reckoning.

I gathered the capos.

Preston sat at the far end of the room.

No position.

Warren stood.

Celeste chose a chair near the wall.

When the three compromised Marconi men entered, they froze at the sight of her.

Interesting.

They knew Celeste.

One whispered:

“You’re alive.”

I turned toward him.

“How?”

His face went pale.

He had served Warren years ago before joining Marconi.

Another marriage-era transfer.

Another planted bridge.

Celeste looked at me.

“That’s how it starts.”

I understood.

Not with armies.

With familiar faces quietly becoming permanent.

May you like

I looked around my own table.

For the first time, I saw how close the Hale marriage had come to repeating itself exactly.
