Chapter 14

Isolde returned to one charity dinner two years later.

Not mine.

Another foundation.

We crossed paths.

She looked different.

Same elegance.

Less armor.

No engagement ring.

No Lennox brooch.

We spoke privately.

“How are you?”

“Better.”

I believed her.

She asked about Aveline.

“Good.”

“Celeste?”

“Good.”

She nodded.

No request for contact.

Progress.

Then:

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“I hated what you did.”

Different.

“I still don’t trust you with household authority.”

She almost smiled.

“Fair.”

Then she said:

“I used to think the women who lasted longest deserved the best positions.”

I waited.

“Now I think we rewarded people for surviving damage we created.”

Yes.

There it was.

Late.

Still useful.

We parted.

No reunion.

May you like

No dramatic closure.

Some relationships belong to the version of yourself you had to outgrow.
