Chapter 3

The archive was not in the ballroom.

Not in Isolde’s suite.

The key opened a cabinet behind the wine library.

Inside were twelve black books.

Different years.

Different estates.

Different hosts.

The newest book carried my family crest.

Without my permission.

That angered me more than I expected.

I opened it.

Guest names.

Seating positions.

Drinks.

Arrival times.

Then notes.

MORGAN — argued with brother near service stair.

VALE — mentioned old debt.

HART — wife unaware of second property.

Nothing explosive alone.

Enough together to map vulnerability.

I looked at Isolde.

She stood across the room with her arms folded.

“This is how my family survives.”

“No.”

I turned one page.

“This is how your family listens.”

“Same thing sometimes.”

There.

At least honest.

I found my own name.

TRISTAM — trusts Rafe more than blood relatives.

Accurate.

Then:

TRISTAM — reacts strongly to servants being humiliated publicly.

I looked at her.

She did not blink.

“You were studying me.”

“I was understanding you.”

“No.”

I closed the book.

“You were cataloging me.”

Different.

Then Aveline found Celeste’s handwriting.

Small notes in the margin.

Not information.

Warnings.

DON’T TRUST THE BLUE ROOM.

THE BELL MEANS MOVE.

ISOLDE KNOWS.

Then one line:

IF I DISAPPEAR, ASK WHY MRS. LENNOX KEPT A SECOND LIST.

Mrs. Lennox.

Isolde’s mother, Diana.

Dead three years.

I looked at Isolde.

“What second list?”

For the first time, she seemed genuinely confused.

“I don’t know.”

That mattered.

Then Rafe noticed one book was newer than the others but labeled twenty years earlier.

False cover.

Inside:

Names of housemaids.

Not guests.

Dates hired.

Days awake.

Information gathered.

Disposition.

Some simply:

LEFT.

Others:

REASSIGNED.

One:

MARRIED OUT.

Then:

CELESTE VALE — TRANSFERRED NORTH.

Aveline made a sound beside me.

Not relief.

Not grief.

Hope.

“North where?”

Isolde looked at the entry.

Then whispered:

“My grandmother’s hotel.”

In Vermont.

Closed to guests for years.

Not empty, apparently.

May you like

Celeste had not vanished.

She had been transferred.
