Chapter 10

The notebook had been inside Carol’s house for three years.
She kept it behind an old family portrait.
Not because she treasured it.
Because destroying it would have been admitting fear.
I opened it at my desk.
Emily’s handwriting.
Page after page documenting the private network.
Names.
Routes.
Promises.
Nothing about police.
Nothing about courts.
Everything about loyalty.
Who answered Carol instead of me.
Who moved money without my approval.
Who used my father’s old contacts.
Raymond appeared on twelve pages.
Carol on almost every one.
Then the final entry:
Grant still thinks his mother complains because she hates change. He does not understand she is building a second family beneath his.
I stopped.
That line hurt.
Because Emily had tried to tell me.
I remembered arguments.
She said Carol treated my decisions as temporary.
I called it generational tension.
She said Raymond listened to Carol before me.
I told her old habits die slowly.
She said the orchard was becoming a staging ground.
I promised to handle it later.
Later became never.
I kept reading.
If anything happens to me, Madison gets the orchard completely. No Holloway route. No exception.
There it was.
The reason Carol needed the transfer.
Emily designed Madison’s inheritance specifically to block the old network.
Not because she foresaw death.
Because she understood my mother.
The last page was unfinished.
C came tonight. Says family land cannot belong to a child. I told her it never belonged to the family. She said Grant will choose blood eventually.
The sentence ended there.
I looked at Carol.
She stood across from me.
“Did you believe that?”
Her eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
“That I would choose you over Emily.”
“You should have.”
Silence.
There it was.
At last.
Not logistics.
Not tradition.
Entitlement.
She believed my wife was temporary.
My daughter’s property reversible.
My authority still partly hers.
The forged signature was simply the latest version of the same belief.

Grant will choose blood eventually.
She never understood Emily and Madison were my blood too.
