Chapter 16

Dennis saw Madison again after two months.

Supervised.

His request.

Her choice.

He arrived carrying no gifts.

Good.

Too many guilty adults try to buy shortcuts.

Madison looked at him.

“Pizza?”

He almost cried.

“I brought none.”

She frowned.

“Why?”

“I thought maybe we could eat whatever you want.”

She considered.

“Pancakes.”

At four in the afternoon.

Fine.

We made pancakes.

Dennis burned the first one.

Madison laughed.

The room relaxed slightly.

Then she asked:

“Why you didn’t stop Grandma?”

My father froze.

Children do not soften questions to protect adults.

He sat across from her.

“I was scared.”

Madison looked confused.

“You’re big.”

Dennis closed his eyes.

I almost smiled.

Exactly.

He continued.

“I was scared of making Grandma angry.”

Madison thought.

“But I was cold.”

His face broke.

“Yes.”

That was the whole moral equation.

Adult fear.

Child suffering.

No philosophy could improve it.

“I should have stopped her.”

Madison nodded.

“Yes.”

Then returned to her pancake.

No hug demanded.

No forgiveness speech.

Dennis accepted that.

Good.

Before leaving, he asked me:

“Do you think she’ll ever trust me?”

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

Fair.

“Can I keep trying?”

“As long as trying does not become pressure.”

He understood.

That became the rule.

Trust rebuilt on the child’s schedule.

Not the adult’s discomfort.

Carol had spent years making everyone else move faster so she would not have to feel powerless.

We were learning the opposite.
