Chapter 15

Two years after the staircase incident, Anthony climbed those same stairs holding Lorenzo’s index finger.

Bianca walked one step behind them.

“Slow.”

Lorenzo looked back.

“I’m holding him.”

“I was talking to both of you.”

Anthony laughed.

The carved banister remained.

The folding screens had been replaced.

The framed photographs were rehung.

The security monitor still glowed beside the staircase.

Bianca had once suggested moving it.

Then changed her mind.

It was a monitor.

Not a memorial.

She refused to let Victor own ordinary objects forever.

Anthony reached the landing and sat down triumphantly.

Lorenzo immediately crouched.

“He’s tired.”

“He’s two.”

“Same thing.”

Bianca shook her head.

The divorce had been final for months.

Victor remained under structured parenting orders.

His contact with Anthony had gradually expanded from supervised visits to short daytime periods under conditions set by the court.

He had complied consistently.

He had also stopped blaming Marcella for everything.

That mattered.

During therapy, he eventually acknowledged that his fear of losing Bianca and his resentment of Lorenzo had become justification for controlling someone he claimed to love.

He did not ask Bianca to forgive him.

She appreciated that more than apologies that demanded something back.

Marcella had not reached the same point.

Her contact remained restricted.

Bianca was comfortable with that.

Lorenzo had changed too.

Not into a gentle man.

Nobody confused him for one.

But he asked before making decisions that belonged to Bianca.

He stopped calling her attorney for updates.

Stopped ordering security around her without permission.

Stopped treating every inconvenience involving Anthony like an emergency requiring six men and an armored vehicle.

Mostly.

One afternoon he sent two bodyguards because the weather forecast mentioned hail.

Bianca sent both home.

They never discussed it again.

At the top of the staircase, Anthony spotted the security monitor.

“Grandpa.”

“Yes?”

“Me.”

His tiny image appeared on the screen.

Lorenzo lifted him.

“That’s you.”

Anthony waved at himself.

Bianca stopped beside them.

For one second she remembered Victor’s hand against her back.

Marcella’s voice.

The hospital bag hitting the landing.

Victor grabbing her afterward and pretending to save her.

Then she looked at her son laughing at his own image.

The memory no longer controlled the room.

That mattered.

Later, during lunch, Anthony spilled milk across Lorenzo’s jacket.

The entire table froze out of old instinct.

Lorenzo looked down at the white stain on his dark suit.

Anthony stared at him.

Bianca waited.

Lorenzo picked up a napkin.

“Terrible aim.”

Anthony laughed.

The room relaxed.

Bianca watched her father wipe his sleeve.

Power had once meant everyone anticipating what Lorenzo might do.

Now the safest moments were the ones where nobody needed to.

After lunch, Bianca prepared to leave.

Lorenzo walked them to the entrance.

“Dinner next Sunday?”

“Maybe.”

He nodded.

No argument.

Anthony was almost asleep against Bianca’s shoulder.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from the court-approved parenting application.

Victor.

A simple request.

Anthony’s third birthday was approaching.

Victor wanted permission to attend the larger family party if his current parenting plan allowed it by then.

Bianca stared at the screen.

Two years earlier, she would have answered entirely from fear.

A year earlier, entirely from anger.

Now she forwarded the request to Rachel and Anthony’s child-development specialist.

Not because she could not decide.

Because the decision belonged to Anthony’s safety, not anyone’s pride.

Lorenzo noticed her expression.

“Problem?”

“No.”

He waited.

Bianca did not explain.

And Lorenzo did not ask again.

That, too, was progress.

She carried Anthony toward the car.

The push had been proven.

Victor and Marcella’s plan had been exposed.

The fake instability narrative was dead.

Bianca had kept her child, her independence, and the right to make decisions about her own life.

Lorenzo had faced consequences for his own violence instead of pretending good intentions erased it.

The central betrayal was finished.

Only one question remained open.

Whether Victor could someday become the kind of father Anthony could know without Bianca having to protect her son from the man who once tried to use him as leverage before he was even born.

May you like

Bianca did not know the answer yet.

Victor would have to earn it one safe decision at a time.
