Chapter 15

The first family dinner in the new house happened on a Sunday.

No extended Vassallos were invited.

Maren’s father came.

Dana came with her wife.

Claire arrived late and complained about traffic.

Daniel Cross brought dessert and spent half the evening being ordered around by Sienna.

Julian slept through almost everything.

Ronan cooked.

Badly.

Maren watched him destroy a pan of chicken and finally stepped in.

“You’re burning it.”

“I’m aware.”

“You don’t look aware.”

“I’m developing awareness.”

She moved beside him.

Then stopped when Ronan reached toward the sink.

The sink.

For a moment, both remembered.

Ronan pulled his hand back.

Maren saw.

“You can wash a pan.”

He looked at her.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

He turned on the water.

Not too hot.

Maren watched him add soap.

Then she laughed.

“What?”

“That is way too much.”

Ronan stared at the bubbles.

“I thought soap cleaned things.”

“Not by volume.”

Sienna ran into the kitchen carrying two plastic plates.

“I help.”

Ronan immediately said:

“No.”

Maren looked at him.

He realized.

Again.

Too fast.

Sienna frowned.

“Why?”

Ronan crouched.

“You can help if you want.”

“I want.”

“Okay.”

“What job?”

Maren handed her napkins.

“Put these on the table.”

Sienna ran away proudly.

No heavy plates.

No obligation.

No earning dinner.

When food was ready, Maren carried Julian to the table.

Ronan started to serve everyone.

Sienna stopped him.

“Mom first.”

The adults went quiet.

Sienna pointed seriously toward Maren.

“Mommy eats first.”

Maren’s eyes filled.

Ronan placed the first plate in front of her.

Then Sienna.

Then everyone else.

Nobody made a speech about it.

That mattered.

The meal was ordinary.

Chicken slightly overcooked.

Potatoes good.

Dessert better because Daniel bought it.

Julian woke halfway through.

Sienna spilled water.

Claire told an embarrassing story about Ronan losing an argument to an accountant.

Maren laughed harder than anyone.

After the guests left, Ronan carried dishes toward the kitchen.

Maren followed.

They stood together beneath the soft lights.

The fraud was finished.

Agatha and Calvin no longer controlled anything in their household.

The old family office was gone.

The estate was sold.

The false expenses were cleared.

The money that could be recovered had been recovered.

The people responsible had faced legal and financial consequences.

There was no hidden document left to find.

No account left to expose.

No final villain waiting behind another door.

Ronan put one plate into the sink.

Maren leaned against the counter.

“I almost left you.”

He stopped.

“I know.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I mean really left.”

Ronan said nothing.

“If you had walked into that kitchen and believed them…”

She could not finish.

Ronan understood.

“They thought I would.”

“Yes.”

“And that’s the part I can’t forget.”

He nodded.

Neither could he.

Maren looked toward the hallway where Sienna’s voice drifted from the living room.

Then toward the bassinet beside the dining table.

“I love you.”

Ronan waited.

“But trusting you before your family speaks…”

She took a slow breath.

“I don’t know if that part is ever going to be automatic again.”

There it was.

The only thing nobody could audit, reimburse, prosecute, or sign away.

Ronan stepped closer but did not touch her until she reached for his hand.

“I’m not asking for automatic.”

Maren looked at him.

“What are you asking for?”

“Another day.”

She considered him.

Then squeezed his hand once.

“You have tomorrow.”

May you like

Ronan nodded.

For now, that was enough.
