Chapter 5

Greta came to the condo voluntarily.

She sat across from Maren at the kitchen table and cried before she said anything useful.

Maren took her hand.

“Stop apologizing.”

“I left you there.”

“Agatha ordered you out.”

“I should have come back.”

Ronan stayed quiet.

This was not his apology to accept.

Greta had been told Tuesday morning that Maren wanted privacy because of pregnancy complications.

Agatha reassigned her to the guest wing.

Two kitchen employees were sent home.

Sienna’s nanny was told Ronan wanted “family-only time” before the dinner.

By Tuesday night, Maren had almost no regular staff around her.

On Wednesday, Greta tried returning.

Calvin met her in the service corridor.

“He said you were upset because Mrs. Maren had been misusing household accounts.”

Ronan looked up.

“Misusing?”

“Yes.”

“He said you were handling it privately.”

Ronan’s expression went cold.

Again.

His name.

His imaginary decisions.

Greta continued.

“I asked whether Mrs. Maren was okay.”

“What did he say?”

“That she was being dramatic because she got caught.”

Maren closed her eyes.

Sienna wandered into the kitchen holding a stuffed giraffe.

The adults stopped speaking.

She climbed into Maren’s lap.

Then looked at Greta.

“Aunt Agatha bad?”

Maren answered carefully.

“Aunt Agatha made bad choices.”

“Food bad choice?”

“Yes.”

Sienna nodded.

“She said Mommy eat after papers.”

The room became still.

Dana crouched near her.

Nobody asked a direct question.

Sienna continued on her own.

“Mommy said no.”

Then she made a pushing motion with her small hand.

“Phone.”

Maren looked at Ronan.

“That happened Wednesday night.”

“What?”

“Calvin put the phone against my hand.”

Ronan’s face changed.

“He tried to force your finger onto it?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me that?”

“I’m telling you now.”

He stopped.

Correct.

Maren continued.

“I pulled away. Agatha told him not in front of Sienna.”

Dana asked gently:

“Do you remember what the phone screen said?”

Maren thought.

“A green button.”

“Words?”

“Something about confirming services.”

Claire joined by video.

“That sounds like the beneficiary certification.”

Maren nodded.

“I told them I wasn’t signing anything I hadn’t read.”

“What happened after that?”

“Agatha said the kitchen would teach me what the family actually paid for.”

Ronan closed his eyes.

The punishment was not random.

They had linked food, labor, and the digital certification explicitly.

Another clue.

But Claire warned him:

“Coercion to sign the certification is one issue.”

Ronan opened his eyes.

“And the fraud?”

“We still need to prove who created the underlying charges.”

“Calvin’s phone.”

“Shows access.”

“Agatha controlled expenses.”

“Shows opportunity.”

Ronan stared at the screen.

Claire continued.

“Give me the chain.”

Ronan leaned back.

He had spent years teaching people that certainty was strength.

Now every responsible professional around him kept demanding something harder.

Proof.
