Chapter 10

The major twist emerged when the accountants reconstructed Lucian’s finances.

The nightclub failure had hurt him.

Gambling had nearly destroyed him.

For almost three years, Lucian had been cycling money through business accounts to hide losses.

At first Valeria covered him with her own savings.

Then she borrowed.

Then she began using Dominic’s trust in her to steer more atelier work toward Lucian.

Lucian inflated invoices.

Valeria approved vendor recommendations.

Both told themselves legitimate future work would eventually balance the difference.

It never did.

Then Luca discovered the problem.

Not because Lucian approached him for a simple loan.

Because Lucian had lost money in a private card operation connected to Luca’s circle.

The debt gave Luca leverage.

Valeria began meeting him.

The kiss in Margaret’s photograph was real.

So was the affair.

But Dominic had misunderstood its direction.

Valeria was not giving Luca Caradonna secrets.

She was trying to keep Luca from giving Dominic Lucian’s secrets.

Luca knew enough about the inflated vendor bills to destroy Lucian’s relationship with the Caradonnas.

He wanted repayment.

Valeria wanted time.

The silver presentation case at the airport contained Lucian’s repayment schedules, asset lists, and documents transferring his interest in the failed Miami venture.

Not the First Light formula.

Three earlier details shifted meaning at once.

The formula had never left the atelier because formula theft was never the scheme.

The transfers to Luca-connected companies were debt payments, not purchases of stolen intellectual property.

And Lucian had lunged for Margaret’s photograph because proof of Valeria’s relationship with Luca would inevitably make Dominic investigate why the rival capo had access to their lives.

Valeria attacked Margaret for the same reason.

The affair was not the deepest secret.

Lucian was.

Rebecca finished explaining the reconstructed timeline.

Dominic sat without speaking.

“So she risked our engagement for him.”

“Yes.”

“She attacked my mother for him.”

“Yes.”

“She grabbed Ava for him.”

Rebecca hesitated.

“For the photograph. But yes, ultimately the panic comes back to protecting the same secret.”

Dominic looked toward the atelier windows.

For days, he had imagined Valeria choosing another man over him.

The truth was more complicated.

She had chosen her brother over nearly everyone.

Luca.

Dominic.

Margaret.

Ava.

Even herself.

The motive made emotional sense.

That did not make it noble.

Then Rebecca placed one more document down.

Lucian had been in treatment twice.

Both times Valeria paid.

Both times he left early.

The second discharge occurred six days before the first fraudulent Knox invoice.

Dominic finally understood why Valeria had protected him so fiercely.

May you like

She had been trying to save Lucian for years.

And every rescue had made him less responsible for saving himself.
