Chapter 1

Garrett remained tangled beneath two collapsed acoustic screens while nobody in the Manhattan ballroom rushed to help him.

That was what finally unsettled Diane.

Not the punch.

Not the kick.

The silence of the men she had spent three years calling her son’s friends.

Every senior capo had moved behind Evelyn.

Margaret stood beside her daughter with Evelyn’s black jacket draped over her shoulders.

Her small purse was still beneath the dinner table.

Evelyn bent to retrieve it.

Garrett pushed himself upright.

“This is insane.”

Evelyn ignored him.

She handed the purse to Margaret.

Her mother held it tightly against her body.

That caught Evelyn’s attention.

“You okay?”

“My hip hurts.”

“We’re getting it checked.”

“No hospital tonight.”

“That wasn’t a question.”

Margaret almost smiled.

Diane stepped forward.

“You’re going to humiliate my son over one argument?”

Evelyn turned toward her.

“He put his hands on my mother.”

“Your mother came here looking for trouble.”

Margaret’s grip tightened around the purse.

Evelyn noticed again.

“What did you come here for?”

Margaret looked toward Garrett.

Then Diane.

“I needed to talk to you privately.”

Garrett immediately interrupted.

“She’s been confused for months.”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“Careful.”

Garrett laughed.

“You showed up uninvited to a private gala carrying accusations nobody asked for.”

Evelyn looked at her mother.

“What accusations?”

Margaret opened her purse.

Inside was a thick envelope from Vescari Arts Foundation’s outside accountant.

Evelyn recognized the firm.

Her mother removed one page.

“I asked them a question about the Lawson bridge financing.”

Garrett stopped moving.

Diane’s hand went to her pearls.

Again.

Evelyn looked between them.

Three years earlier, Garrett had supposedly saved the foundation when it came within days of missing grant commitments.

His family had reminded everyone of it ever since.

Margaret handed Evelyn the page.

“There’s something wrong with the story you were told about where that money came from.”

Garrett stepped toward them.

“Give me that.”

Every capo behind Evelyn moved at once.

Not far.

Just enough.

Garrett stopped.

Evelyn looked down at the paper.

At the top was a funding account she did not recognize.

At the bottom was a name she did.

Margaret Vescari.

Evelyn slowly raised her eyes.

“Mom.”

May you like

Margaret swallowed.

“I should’ve told you three years ago.”
