Chapter 12

Evelyn met Garrett and Diane together.

Their lawyers were present.

Margaret chose not to attend.

“I’ve already said what I know,” she told Evelyn. “The rest belongs to your marriage.”

Garrett looked exhausted when Evelyn placed the reconstructed timeline in front of him.

Diane did not touch it.

Evelyn began with one question.

“Did you create the cash shortage?”

Garrett stared at her.

Diane interrupted.

“He managed timing.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“I asked my husband.”

Garrett’s mouth tightened.

“Yes.”

No speech.

No excuse.

Just one word.

Evelyn felt strangely calm.

“Why?”

He looked toward Diane.

Then away.

“Because I was tired of being decorative.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Garrett continued.

“I brought deals. I fixed problems. I worked seventy-hour weeks. Then some seventy-year-old guy would slap my shoulder and ask how Evelyn’s husband was doing.”

“You wanted respect.”

“I wanted standing.”

“So you manufactured a crisis.”

“I thought I could control it.”

“And my mother’s money?”

“I knew she’d help you.”

“You knew she’d hide it.”

“Yes.”

Diane finally spoke.

“My son was treated like hired help.”

Evelyn turned.

“He was hired.”

Diane’s face hardened.

“He married you.”

“That didn’t purchase my family.”

“It should have made him family.”

“It did.”

Evelyn looked at Garrett.

“That’s why I trusted him enough to give him authority.”

Garrett leaned forward.

“And every time I used it, somebody reminded me it was yours to take back.”

“There.”

Evelyn pointed at him.

“That’s what you were protecting.”

Garrett stopped.

“Not money. Not even your job.”

She continued.

“You wanted power nobody could remind you came from me.”

Garrett did not deny it.

Diane looked toward the door.

Evelyn noticed.

“And you?”

Diane straightened.

“What about me?”

“You spent three years telling everyone the Lawsons saved us.”

Diane’s voice became smaller.

“I spent my whole life watching families like yours treat people like mine as useful but never equal.”

Margaret’s modest dress at the gala.

Diane’s pearls.

Trash belongs on the floor.

Everything you have came from marrying my son.

The contempt had always been covering insecurity.

Evelyn understood it.

She did not excuse it.

She looked at Garrett.

“You get one chance to cooperate with the audit before this leaves family hands completely.”

Garrett asked:

“And our marriage?”

Evelyn removed her wedding ring.

May you like

She placed it on the table.

“That already left.”
