Chapter 10

Veronica’s reunion with Matteo had been planned.
Not because she wanted his money.
Not at first.
Because Richard was terrified.
Fourteen months after Elena died, an outside auditor reopened several old Vaughn vendor accounts.
Richard believed Elena had left evidence somewhere Matteo might eventually find.
Veronica had one advantage her brother did not.
Matteo did not know the full extent of her relationship with Elena.
So Veronica attended a charity event she knew Matteo would attend.
She positioned herself near mutual acquaintances.
She made the second meeting feel accidental.
Then a third.
Then dinner.
Then grief became companionship.
Companionship became intimacy.
And eventually Matteo placed his motherless daughter in the care of a woman who had once helped silence Lily’s mother.
That was the major betrayal.
The engagement itself had begun as surveillance.
Veronica needed to know what Matteo knew.
Whether he had found Elena’s letters.
Whether Lily’s trust contained records.
Whether old accounts would be reopened.
Richard needed warning.
Then something happened neither sibling planned.
Veronica genuinely fell in love with Matteo.
That did not stop the deception.
It made her more desperate to preserve it.
When Lily began writing letters about things she overheard, Veronica intercepted them.
When Lily discovered Elena’s hidden notes, Veronica searched her room.
When Lily refused to surrender the framed photograph, Veronica punished her.
And on Matteo’s birthday, Lily threatened to hand him the surviving letter herself.
So Veronica chained the child outside.
Not because Lily was uncontrollable.
Because the four-year-old was about to destroy a relationship Veronica had spent years building on a lie.
Matteo sat across from her after the full timeline was reconstructed.
His eyes did not leave her face.
“You came back to watch me.”
Veronica’s chest rose slowly.
“Yes.”
“You stayed because you loved me.”
Tears slid down her cheeks.
“Yes.”
“And you hurt Lily because keeping me mattered more than what you were becoming.”
Veronica closed her eyes.
Her voice came apart.
“Yes.”
Matteo looked toward Richard.
“And you let your sister marry the man whose wife you betrayed.”
Richard swallowed.
“I was protecting her.”
Matteo’s voice became colder.
“No.”
A pause.
“You were protecting yourself through her.”
Richard had no answer.
Then Matteo opened Elena’s sealed correspondence box again.
Beneath the false bottom was one final envelope.
Not addressed to Matteo.
Not Veronica.
Not Richard.

On the front, Elena had written:
FOR LILY — WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH.
