Chapter 14

Matteo found the authorization.
His signature was genuine.
Three days after Elena’s funeral, Daniel had placed a stack of estate-clearance forms in front of him.
Matteo signed without reading.
One allowed Veronica, then listed as an outside family liaison, to remove “sensitive personal correspondence” for secure storage.
Matteo remembered nothing about it.
He had been medicated for sleep.
Barely eating.
Moving through the funeral week as if someone else occupied his body.
Veronica had not forged his permission.
She had used it.
That distinction cut deeper.
Matteo called Richard and Veronica to one final meeting.
No capos.
No bodyguards inside the room.
No children.
He placed three items on the table.
The authorization.
Elena’s recovered letter.
The decorative chain that had been around Lily’s ankle.
Richard stared at the chain.
Veronica could not.
Matteo remained standing.
His voice was quiet.
“You both spent years telling yourselves I would destroy you if I knew the truth.”
Neither answered.
“You were probably right about the man I was.”
Richard looked up.
Matteo continued.
“But that does not make what you did survival.”
His eyes moved to Richard.
“You stole.”
Then Veronica.
“You covered it.”
Then the chain.
“And when a four-year-old became the last person who could expose you, you punished her for remembering.”
Veronica’s hands shook beneath the table.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
Matteo did not threaten them.
That seemed to unsettle Richard most.
“What happens to us?”
“The processes already started continue.”
Richard frowned.
“And personally?”
Matteo looked at him.
“You no longer have access to my family.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You can't erase blood.”
“No.”
Matteo’s gaze remained steady.
“I can remove trust.”
Then Veronica asked the harder question.
“What happens to everything Elena wrote about you?”
Matteo looked toward his late wife’s letter.
“I read it.”
His hand rested beside the chain.
“I change what I can.”
The meeting ended without violence.
After they left, Matteo picked up the final page of Elena’s letter to him.
He had overlooked one line near the bottom.
If you are reading this after something has gone wrong, do not make Lily responsible for becoming the person who finally made you look.
Matteo stared at the sentence.
Elena had understood his greatest danger before he did.
May you like
Not betrayal.
Blindness.
